Greyrock GTL Facility | Russell T. Rudy Energy LLC
“Rigzone” reports that Greystone Energy, backed by a consortium of investors led by Sterling Private Capital and Eagle Oil and Gas, will build a small gas-to-liquids (GTL) plant near Houston. The facility will be operational by the end of 2015 and will be capable of converting natural gas, or natural gas liquids (NGL) into diesel fuel. The initial feedstock will be Eagle Ford gas. While Greyrock would not comment as to capacity, it did indicate that their technology can produce from 100 to 5,000 barrels per day.
GTL technology has existed for quite a while, but has needed large volumes of throughput to be economically feasible. Smaller scale plants will now enable operators to monetize what would otherwise be stranded gas at remote locations. The fact that the Greystone process can also produce diesel from NGL’s, especially ethane, is very encouraging. Even in many locations with natural gas processing plants, there is no market for ethane. The ability to use ethane as a feedstock will provide many operators with greater flexibility.
The implications for reducing the amount of natural gas that is currently being flared in the Bakken shale are indeed encouraging as well.
