Refracking Success | Russell T. Rudy Energy LLC
A recent article in “World Oil” relates encouraging results from refracking gas wells in the Haynesville shale of Southwest Arkansas, Northwest Louisiana, and Northeast Texas. While the article was written by Schlumberger, and reads like an infomercial, it is nevertheless informative and encouraging.
Comstock Resources wanted to optimize production from its gas wells in the Haynesville. Well performance had been significantly compromised by under stimulation of the lateral leg of the PACE 33 HZ #1, and significant loss of bottom hole pressure. Comstock contracted with Schlumberger to refracture the well in hopes that it could economically enhance the existing fracture network and initiate new fractures in areas of the well which had not been previously fractured.
Schlumberger’s BroadBand Sequence fracturing process utilized proprietary fluids for fracturing the reservoir rock, and transporting proppant (material which keeps the cracks open) to the fractures. The results were dramatic. The initial production rate after refracturing increased seven fold, from 500 thousand cubic feet per day (Mcf/d) to 4,000. Flowing pressure increased 300% as well. Even more impressive, after three months, the well was still producing 2,500 Mcf/d and pressure had increased 400%.
Schlumberger concludes that many wells are candidates for refracturing, including those which are sparsely spaced wells or were originally stimulated many years ago with outdated technology.
Even factoring in the possibility of promotional hype, and the fact that this well might be an anomaly, this is still encouraging news for shale gas operators.
