Barnett Doubles in Size | Russell T. Rudy Energy LLC
“Rigzone” reports that in 2003 the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) assessed the undiscovered technically recoverable reserves of the Barnett Shale in Bend Arch-Fort Worth basin, based on the vertical drilling technology in use at that time. Natural gas reserves were estimated at 26.2 trillion cubic feet (tcf) and natural gas liquids at 1 billion barrels. Potential oil reserves were not calculated.
The USGS has recently released a new assessment of undiscovered, but technically recoverable, reserves based on horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing technology. On this basis, gas reserves are now estimated to be 53 tcf, 172 million barrels of oils and 176 million barrels of natural gas liquids.
Since the 2003 assessment, over 16,000 horizontal wells have produced 15 tcf of gas and 59 million barrels of oil. The Barnett shale stretches South and West from Dallas, covers 5,000 square miles and 18 counties.
Production in the Barnett shale has declined since 2015 and produced an average of 4.3 billion cubic feet of gas per day in 2015.
