Fracing as a Political Football | Russell T. Rudy Energy LLC
In spite of her previous general support of fracking, Hillary Clinton seems to be driven to the left in her contest with Bernie Sanders for the Democratic nomination. She now favors aggressive federal regulation of fracking, saying she would not support it in states or communities that don’t want it, when it causes pollution, or if chemicals used in the process are not disclosed. She concludes, “By the time we get through all my conditions, I do not think there will be many places in America where fracing will continue to take place.”
Shutting down fracking would essentially mean shutting down further shale oil and gas development. Many industry observers see Clinton’s shift as a direct result of her continued efforts to tack to the left. However, Sanders is categorically opposed to fracking, and Clinton’s policy shift still is not enough for many deep-green environmentalists, who will not be satisfied by anything short of an all-out ban.
Yong Jung Cho with the environmental group, 350 Action, declares, “Clinton will continue to struggle to convince climate advocates that she is serious about addressing the crisis until she comes out for a full ban on fracing. Clinton has moved from supporting fracing to insisting on regulations that would make it impossible to frac in most places. It’s high time to come out against it all together.”
Conversely, Republican candidates for president are supportive of oil and gas development. In fact, front-runner Donald Trump feels that his opposition to New York’s ban on fracking will win him votes in that state.
Quite a bit of controversy over a technique that has been safely, and successfully, practiced in the U. S. since the 1940’s.
