Marcellus Premier Shale Gas | Russell T. Rudy Energy LLC
With production of 12 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) the Marcellus shale is the premier shale gas play, not only in the U.S., but in the world, according to a recent article in “Rigzone”. Further, Wood MacKenzie, a consulting firm, predicts Marcellus production of more than 20 Bcf/d by 2018. These gains will be attributable to increasingly productive wells and improved completion methods.
Pennsylvania is the epicenter of the Marcellus and the sweet spot of the play is the Susquehanna core in Susquehanna and Bradford Counties. Cabot Oil and Gas is the premier operator in this area with 15 of the top 20 producing wells in the second half of 2013. Some of the wells here have ultimate expected recoveries of 12 Bcf, thanks in large part to a 350 foot thick pay zone.
Remarkably, there has been no mass exodus from the Marcellus, in spite of currently low gas prices. This is in part attributable to the fact that the southwest Pennsylvania structure is liquids rich. An estimated 1 Bcf/d is temporarily being choked back, but this is due to a lack of gathering and processing capacity.
