Development of the Marcellus shale means Jobs for PA workers | Russell T. Rudy Energy LLC
“Rigzone” reports that a new Marcellus Shale Coalition report confirms what serious industry observers have always known: shale development means jobs. At year-end 2013 unemployment in Pennsylvania was the lowest it has been since 2008. With plans to hire 2,000 new workers in 2014, unemployment will likely drop further.
Most hiring is anticipated in the engineering and construction, midstream and pipeline, and operations and maintenance sectors of the energy industry. These are considered long term positions.
While the outlook for potential employees is bright, there are challenges for potential employers. These include finding qualified, knowledgeable and experienced personnel who are willing to relocate to the Marcellus area. The most acute shortages involve engineering, geology, health, safety, environment and regulatory staff.
The study found that one of the biggest misconceptions about Marcellus hiring is that most jobs are going to candidates from outside the area. In fact, 83% of the workers most recently hired are from Pennsylvania (60%), Ohio, West Virginia, New York and Maryland.
