Natural Gas as a Bridging Fuel | Russell T. Rudy Energy LLC
“World Oil” reports that Elisabeth Torstad, CEO of consulting firm DNV GL, asserts that natural gas will play a major role as we transition to a safer, more sustainable, energy supply. Meanwhile, she expects global demand for energy to increase by 50% by 2050. However, she contends that the market needs to become more efficient.
Natural gas is widely acknowledged as a low carbon, cost effective, fuel which will play a key part in helping the world reduce CO2 emissions. To optimize the role that gas will play, we need to insure that it addresses the “energy trilemma” of being available, affordable and clean.
While the world aspires to develop scalable renewable energy sources, gas remains the cleanest option available on a large scale. Torstad sees growth potential for natural gas in the interim, especially as a transportation fuel. She went on to say, “Small-scale LNG plants and capturing natural gas from, for example, flaring operations, will make gas an even more affordable and cleaner solution and help it take a key role in the coming years.”
Torstad also sees a larger role for natural gas used in conjunction with solar and wind power, and as a filler source of energy when these options are not available due to darkness or calm periods. However, she went on to say that in order to maximize the contribution of gas in meeting the world’s energy needs, collaboration , smart technology development, and appropriate regulatory and political structures will be necessary.
