Politics and Technology | Russell T. Rudy Energy LLC

Legendary oil investor, Boone Pickens, and Harold Hamm, the Chairman of Continental Natural Resources, were the key energy advisors to Donald Trump during the presidential campaign. Accordingly, many industry observers expected the Republican’s victory to result in more projects and development of technology.  However, a recent article in “Rigzone” contends that there would have been technological advances in the industry regardless of who won the election.

Had the Democrats prevailed in the election there would likely have been a focus on technologies which concentrated on compliance with new environmental regulations such as reduced methane emissions and promotion of renewable energy sources.

However, with the Trump victory, many industry observers expect researchers to concentrate on advances which would improve efficiency. This could mean technologies that reduce costs through increased mechanization of process which would minimize staffing in an effort to reduce costs.  Shiva Rajagopalan with Seven Lakes Technologies foresees progress through automation, and the Internet of Things, which would involve faster and better data collection and algorithms to process this data.

Scott Anderson, with the energy focused law firm Hogan Lovells, sees advances in methane monitoring and capture continuing, as well as the technology to treat and re-use produced water. However, the incentive will be efficiency, rather than regulation, driven.
