Shell Score Major Utica Shale Gas Discovereies in PA | Russell T. Rudy Energy LLC
“Rigzone” recently reported that Shell has announced two natural gas discovery wells in the Utica shale in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. The Neal and Gee wells extend the sweet spot of the Utica play beyond Southeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania, into an area in which Shell holds approximately 430,000 acres.
The Gee and Neal wells were drilled to approximate depths of 15,000 feet with lateral (horizontal) legs of 3-4,000 feet. The Gee well has been producing for nearly a year and is over 100 miles Northeast of the nearest horizontal Utica well. It had an initial flow rate of 11.2 million cubic feet per day (mcf/d). The Neal well has been producing since February with a peak rate of 26.5 mcf/d. Shell currently has four rigs running in Tioga County and is awaiting results later this year.
These high pressure wells producing from an exceptional quality reservoir would tend to, at least partially, validate Shell’s strategy of selling mature producing assets to pursue a small number of high potential prospects.
